Best Places for Military Families Stationed at MacDill AFB to Travel

Military families stationed at MacDill AFB exploring Florida

Few duty stations in the country match MacDill Air Force Base for location. You're on a peninsula in Tampa Bay, surrounded by water, with the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the Atlantic coast within driving distance. The weather is near-perfect, the beaches are world-class, and you're within an easy drive of Disney World, the Florida Keys, and everything in between.

Tampa itself has plenty to offer: Ybor City, Busch Gardens, the Tampa Riverwalk, and a serious food scene. But once you're ready to explore further, Florida opens up in every direction.

Here's where military families stationed at MacDill should put on their travel list.

Clearwater Beach and St. Petersburg day trip for military families from MacDill AFB

1. Clearwater Beach & St. Petersburg

30 miles west · about 45 minutes

Why go: Clearwater Beach has been rated the #1 beach in the US multiple times. It's a short drive from MacDill and a completely different world: powder-white sand, calm Gulf water, and a beach boardwalk full of restaurants and activity rentals. St. Petersburg, just south, is a thriving arts city with one of the best waterfront districts in Florida.

Must-dos:

  • Clearwater Beach: Park in the main lot and walk north. The further you walk from the pier, the quieter the beach gets. Bring snorkeling gear — there's good reef activity.
  • Clearwater Marine Aquarium: Home of Winter the Dolphin (from the Dolphin Tale movies). A hit with kids and a feel-good experience for families.
  • Fort De Soto Park: A barrier island county park south of St. Pete with five interconnected islands, a fort, campgrounds, and some of the most beautiful beaches in Florida. Easily one of the state's best parks.
  • St. Pete's Central Arts District: Murals everywhere, the Dali Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, craft cocktail bars, and excellent brunch spots. A great adults-only afternoon.
  • Caladesi Island State Park: Accessible only by ferry from Honeymoon Island. One of the last undeveloped barrier islands in Florida — some of the best shelling and swimming you'll find anywhere on the Gulf.

Military tip: Clearwater Marine Aquarium offers military discounts on admission. Fort De Soto Park is Pinellas County-operated and has very affordable camping and day use fees. The Dali Museum in St. Pete offers reduced military admission.

Orlando Disney World trip for military families from MacDill AFB Tampa

2. Orlando & Walt Disney World

75 miles east · about 1.5 hours

Why go: Orlando is the theme park capital of the world, and the military community gets some of the best access in the business. Disney World, Universal Studios, SeaWorld, and LEGOLAND are all within the metro area. The Disney Armed Forces Salute program alone makes Orlando one of the most cost-effective family vacations for military families anywhere in the country.

Must-dos:

  • Walt Disney World: Four parks, two water parks, and Disney Springs. The Magic Kingdom is non-negotiable with kids. EPCOT's Food and Wine Festival (fall) and Festival of the Arts (winter/spring) are exceptional for adults.
  • Shades of Green: The Armed Forces Recreation Center at Walt Disney World. An on-property military resort with discounted room rates and direct park access — book early, it fills up fast.
  • Universal Studios / Islands of Adventure: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter alone is worth the trip. Velocity Pass holders (military) can get discounted tickets.
  • SeaWorld Orlando: Military families receive free admission for active duty through the Waves of Honor program. Incredible value.
  • I-Drive and Disney Springs: When the kids need a break from parks, the entertainment districts deliver. Good food, mini golf, escape rooms, and shopping.

Military tip: The Disney Armed Forces Salute offers active duty military and up to 5 guests discounted 4-day tickets to Disney World — one of the best military discounts in the country. SeaWorld's Waves of Honor program gives active duty free admission. Shades of Green on Disney property is the military resort — book it months in advance.

Sarasota Siesta Key Florida day trip for military families from MacDill

3. Sarasota & Siesta Key

60 miles south · about 1 hour

Why go: Sarasota is Florida's cultural capital — a city with world-class museums, a thriving arts scene, and the most-rated beach in the country in Siesta Key. The fine quartz sand stays cool even in August. It's a quieter, more refined alternative to the resort energy of Clearwater, and an easy day trip from MacDill.

Must-dos:

  • Siesta Key Beach: The white quartz sand is famously powdery and cool to the touch. The beach is wide, clean, and gorgeous. Arrive early on weekends for parking.
  • The Ringling: The former estate of circus magnate John Ringling, now a sprawling complex with an art museum (including one of the finest collections of Rubens in the world), a circus museum, the Ca'd'Zan mansion, and beautiful grounds on the bay.
  • Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium: A serious marine research facility open to the public. Great for families interested in sharks, manatees, and sea turtles.
  • Downtown Sarasota and St. Armands Circle: Upscale shopping and dining on a palm-ringed traffic circle, walkable from the beach.
  • Myakka River State Park: One of Florida's oldest and largest state parks, 20 minutes east of downtown. Airboat tours, alligator sightings, and a canopy walk.

Military tip: The Ringling offers military discounts on admission — one of the best deals in Florida arts. Myakka River State Park has military-friendly camping rates. Siesta Key Beach itself is free and public — just arrive early on weekends in season.

Key West Florida trip for military families from MacDill AFB

4. Key West & The Florida Keys

400 miles south · about 4 hours

Why go: Key West is a bucket list trip, not a quick day trip. But if you're stationed in Florida and haven't done the Overseas Highway drive, you're leaving one of the great American road trip experiences on the table. The drive itself — 42 bridges over turquoise water — is worth the trip. And Key West at the end is like nowhere else in the United States.

Must-dos:

  • Overseas Highway (US-1): The drive from Homestead to Key West through the Keys is iconic. Stop at Bahia Honda State Park for some of the clearest water in Florida. Islamorada is the sportfishing capital of the world if that's your thing.
  • Duval Street and Old Town Key West: The energy of Key West is concentrated here — outdoor bars, live music, conch fritters, and the Southernmost Point marker. Walk it all on your first night.
  • Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum: Hemingway lived here for 10 years. The house is beautiful and the cats are legendary (many have six toes — Hemingway's descendants).
  • Dry Tortugas National Park: 70 miles west of Key West by ferry or floatplane — the most remote national park in the lower 48. Fort Jefferson is a Civil War-era masonry fort on a tiny island surrounded by pristine reef. Snorkeling is world-class. Free with military pass but the ferry isn't cheap.
  • Naval Air Station Key West: Still active. Active duty can access base recreation facilities including the beach — one of the best kept secrets in the Keys.
Military flag

Military tip: NAS Key West has beach recreation facilities open to active duty — check with the MWR office before your trip. Dry Tortugas National Park entry is free with the military pass (ferry cost is separate). Key West is a long drive — consider making it at least a 2-night trip to do it right.

Fort Myers Sanibel Island trip for military families from MacDill AFB Tampa

5. Fort Myers & Sanibel Island

120 miles south · about 1.5 hours

Why go: Fort Myers and its barrier islands are Florida's best-kept Gulf Coast secret. Sanibel Island is the world's premier shelling destination, with more shell variety than almost anywhere on earth due to the island's east-west orientation. Cape Coral has over 400 miles of navigable canals. And the whole area is far less commercialized than Clearwater or Naples.

Must-dos:

  • Sanibel Island: The shells here are legendary — conch, lightning whelk, junonia, and more. Ride a bike along Periwinkle Way and walk the beaches at low tide. The "Sanibel stoop" is a real thing.
  • J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge: A 6,400-acre wildlife refuge on Sanibel with roseate spoonbills, manatees, alligators, and over 200 bird species. Drive Wildlife Drive or kayak the backcountry.
  • Cape Coral: If you know someone with a boat, Cape Coral's canal system is endlessly explorable. The Cape Coral Yacht Club Beach is public and surprisingly uncrowded.
  • Fort Myers Beach: Rebuilt and reopening after Hurricane Ian. A classic Gulf beach with a pier, marina, and shrimp boats. The shrimp festivals are worth planning around.
  • Edison and Ford Winter Estates: Thomas Edison and Henry Ford were winter neighbors in Fort Myers. The museum and botanical gardens are genuinely impressive.
Military flag

Military tip: J.N. Ding Darling NWR is free to enter. The Edison and Ford Winter Estates offer military discounts on tours. Fort Myers and Cape Coral are excellent vacation rental markets — a canal-front home with a boat dock is the signature local experience.
