San Diego may be the best duty station in America, and the location is a big reason why. Whether you're at Camp Pendleton, MCAS Miramar, Naval Station San Diego, NAS North Island, MCRD San Diego, or Naval Base Coronado, you're sitting at the junction of the Pacific coast, the desert, the mountains, and one of the most visited entertainment corridors in the country.
San Diego itself is world-class. The Zoo, Balboa Park, the Gaslamp Quarter, Coronado Beach, and La Jolla are all in your backyard. But when you're ready to stretch further, Southern California opens up like few regions on earth.
Here's where military families stationed in San Diego should put on their travel list.
120 miles north · about 2 hours (traffic permitting)
Why go: Los Angeles is the entertainment capital of the world, and Disneyland in Anaheim sits right between San Diego and LA on the I-5. Both make for excellent weekend trips — Disneyland is unbeatable for families with kids, and LA's scale and variety reward weekend after weekend of exploration.
Must-dos:

Military tip: The Disney Armed Forces Salute offers active duty military and up to 5 guests significantly discounted multi-day tickets to Disneyland — one of the best military discounts in entertainment. Universal Studios Hollywood also offers military pricing through their website. The Getty Center is free every day, no ID required.
140 miles northeast · about 2.5 hours
Why go: Joshua Tree is one of the most visually striking national parks in the country — an other-worldly landscape of massive granite boulder formations, twisted Joshua trees, and crystalline desert skies. It sits at the confluence of the Mojave and Sonoran deserts, and the mood shifts dramatically depending on the season. Fall, winter, and spring are ideal; summer is brutal.
Must-dos:

Military tip: Free entry to Joshua Tree with the America the Beautiful Military Pass. The town of Twentynine Palms, adjacent to the park's north entrance, is home to Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) — active duty can check whether base facilities are accessible during your visit. Camping in the park fills up fast on weekends — book well in advance on recreation.gov.
270 miles northeast · about 4 hours
Why go: Las Vegas is a 4-hour drive from San Diego, or a short 45-minute flight. It's the most entertainment-dense destination in the country — world-class shows, restaurants, pools, day trips to extraordinary desert landscapes, and a culture that's genuinely enthusiastic about the military. Las Vegas does military appreciation well, and the discounts are real.
Must-dos:

Military tip: Red Rock Canyon NCA (BLM-managed) and all national parks on any day trip are free with the military pass. Several Las Vegas shows and attractions offer standby military pricing — always ask at the box office.
200 miles north · about 3 hours
Why go: Santa Barbara is California at its most refined — Spanish colonial architecture, palm-lined beaches, a thriving wine country in the Santa Ynez Valley, and the kind of perpetual sunshine that makes everything look better. It's a longer drive from San Diego, but it's a genuinely different California experience and well worth an overnight.
Must-dos:

Military tip: Santa Barbara County wine country has several tasting rooms that offer military discounts — ask when you visit. Channel Islands National Park has free entry with the military pass (Island Packers ferry from Ventura is a separate cost). Santa Barbara is a competitive vacation rental market — book well in advance for peak season weekends.
130 miles northeast · about 2.5 hours
Why go: When San Diego families need a mountain escape from the coast, Big Bear Lake delivers. At 6,752 feet in the San Bernardino Mountains, it's a completely different climate and ecosystem from the Southern California coast — snow in winter, cool summer evenings, and a genuine alpine lake experience within a half-day drive. It's one of the most visited mountain resorts in California, and for good reason.
Must-dos:

Military tip: Big Bear Mountain Resort offers military discounts on lift tickets — check their website before your trip. The San Bernardino National Forest, which surrounds the lake, is free to access (some recreation areas require a day pass). Big Bear vacation rental cabins are the best way to experience the area — book a place with a fireplace and lake view for a winter weekend.
