Have you ever tried to get a military discount on AirBnb? How about VRBO? If you haven’t, let me take a moment to share the process with you.

Here’s the situation:

You and your family are planning a vacation to a fun, bucket list location…an oasis with excellent food, an amazing music scene, kind people, maybe some hiking or equine activities for the kids…for sake of argument let’s call your dream destination NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.

Next you jump on AirBnb to find a sweet vacation home. There are more options than you can possibly sift through with rooftop decks, professional design, and sick karaoke rooms. And when you input your dates, you realize that $499/night dream home is actually $4,500 for a three-night stay. Yuck.

What’s next? Obviously a google search for ‘military discount vacation rentals in Nashville’! And the result? Pages of options hosted by reputable veterans offering affordable rates for our community? Not even close…only a few more AirBnb links which say nothing about a military discount.

The only thing left to do is message each host individually and ask “do you offer a military discount for your Airbnb?”. I find this uncomfortable and icky…and I bet you do too. Even if the host is willing to offer the military discount, they must then go into the app, reconfigure the stay, and send a special offer through the Airbnb platform. For the casual host this is not a trivial task.

Also, if we’re being honest, for a host in a hot AirBnb market like Nashville, it’s simply more trouble than it’s worth to offer a military discount.

This entire process is cumbersome, time consuming, and most importantly, it detracts from an otherwise great hospitality experience for all parties involved.
